Check out the link below. I’d seen similar guys (not sure if they were also called Sapeurs or were even French speaking) on that Bizarre Foods show, but the Guinness sponsored video in the link below is much more concise and interesting:

If you’ve never been to the Virginia Gold Cup, you need to go. If you don’t know someone with a tent, I strongly recommend University Row. Sign up with your alumni network, or in my case, since CNU doesn’t have an affiliation (yet), my parents’. The pictures below are from last year. They are a combination of my and my friends’ facebook pictures, and University Row’s facebook pictures. As you can tell, its a really good time. Unlimited good food, mint juleps, jim beam, and horse racing. What more could you want?
Thanks to my hat, I was chosen for the fashion show/runway showdown. I lost (to someone in a do-rag, it must have been rigged), but it was a lot of fun. Despite the outcome, like my number, I was #1 (look at that strut). Walking the runway in a Virginia Bow Tie, linen, bourbon in hand, and cigar after? Check it off the bucket list.
The drive up is always pretty rowdy. The drive home is usually a lot quieter (RP). I’m going to be out of country for the 2014 Gold Cup, but I hope you go anyway, and maybe I’ll see you there next year.
More info about the Gold Cup, and Steeplechases in general.

Its a Virginia based company, and the shirt I have is the Goshen, which I like to believe is named after the Scout Camp here in VA. Paul is the son of another Paul Trible, the president of CNU, my alma mater. I concur that Ledbury’s button stance is superior to Brooks Brothers, but most of the shirts in my closet are still Brooks Bros. Thats primarily because the majority were purchased before Ledbury was around, but also because I like a button down collar, which is too rarely offered by Ledbury. I know sartorialists will deride my predilection for the button down, but it just looks the best without a tie. I only really wear a tie at events or important meetings, so most days I’m in a button down. I digress. Ledbury sent out an email with a great Mardi Gras playlist, so I thought I’d share it. Its so good, it got me to post this, and think about their shirts. Well played Ledbury.

I started this post for VDay week, but never finished it. Way back in 2009/10, I decided to go pick out an engagement ring. Since jewelry/jewelry stores were not my forte, I asked my dad and family for help. My dad took me to his guy in DC. He asked me some questions about myself and my potential fiance, and then showed me some options. I like to think of myself as a fairly traditional guy, but I ended up with a fairly modern looking solitaire in platinum. I can’t find an image that looks like what I got, but to get an idea of how modern it is, here is the jeweler, and the collection. Rose gold is not for everybody, and I think my wife’s platinum rings are perfect for her. When it came time to get my ring, I had a decision to make. I knew I wanted something subtle and traditional, but gold or silver tone? My dad has gold, as most men of his generation do. Every single one of my married friends opted for silver tone, be it platinum, silver, white gold, tungsten, or titanium. My jeweler, seeing that I wasn’t completely sold on yellow gold or silver tone, brought me something I’d never heard of before: rose gold. I loved it, and still do. The addition of copper makes a unique color that stands out in a subtle way, and looks great (as long as you keep at least a base tan, assuming you’re caucasian). I couldn’t be happier with my choice, and have since, gotten a few rose gold accessories:
The three watches pictures above are not automatic, and fairly inexpensive. They are not solid rose gold, but have held up very well. If you’re young, on a budget, or not that into watches, these make very good choices. All are Invicta brand. The silver watch on the upper left of the winder is automatic, and also Invicta. They make very good watches at a great value. The silver one, while not rose gold, approximates a bond watch I’ve always been a fan of:
Much more about the bond watch and strap here:
I’m sold on rose gold. The only drawback I’ve experienced is that I’ve not found a set of tuxedo studs in rose gold.
If you have the means and inclination, here are some more rose gold options:
If yellow gold is more your style, enjoy the following (probably NSFW, language) videos:

This will not be everyones’ taste, but I enjoy it so much I’ll go out on a limb. I think Archer is one of the funniest shows on TV. The premise of Archer is that Sterling Archer is a government contracted spy, employed by his mother, working with his on again off again girlfriend, and shirking work while jetting around the world to enjoy the good life, and getting into many misadventures in the process. The humor is pretty off-color, so be warned. Archer has been called Arrested Development meets James Bond. If you haven’t checked it out, look on Netflix, or Mondays at 10 on FX.
I don’t think these videos do the show justice, but why not:

I was thinking about getting a hacking jacket, and I thought I knew a little about tweed… The wealth of knowledge linked above is amazing.

A couple years ago, during a rainy fishing trip in Alaska, I picked up a waxed cotton Alaskan Brewing Company hat. It served me well in the rain, and I still have it. When I got home, I looked into waterproofing my own hats. I picked up a bar of otter wax, and bought the blue version of my favorite hat (pictured below in Old South Grey):
It was really easy. You just rub the bar on the hat, then heat the hat up with a hair dryer to melt the wax into the fabric. You can find some tutorial videos here. The finished product is great for a rainy day. Its an easy DIY project, and the hat will go great with your Barbour jacket.
