On Friday, HB and I went to the Eden Center with Ryry and Jodi. We had squid two ways and plenty of 33. Good food and good company. On Saturday, the Beeze and I went to Annapolis in the drop top.
We went to a liquor store on main street and scored lots of good stuff. Some dusty brown, a Talisker I’ve never tried, and some Pilar (Hemingway) rum.
At City Dock Coffee, I had a Jamaican iced tea, which was amazing. I hope to recreate it. It tasted like black tea, pineapple juice, all spice, and nutmeg.
A fellow Virginian representing on enemy soil. Then it was time for Pusser’s. I had a couple painkiller (#4s) while we waited for an outdoor table. After being seated, we enjoyed the sunset, and another painkiller.

by rsiv withOn Friday, I headed to Georgetown for a row, and also for the grand opening of Nauti Foods (the new DC food boat). I got my scull at Thompson Boat Center, and headed towards the three sisters. It was after three, but I didn’t see Nauti Foods, and feared the worst.
After some more rowing, I spotted something in the distance. At first it looked like any other pontoon on the Potomac. But…
…it was Nauti Foods! I quickly realized that my choice in craft was not well-suited for curbside service. Fortunately, the kayakers pictured on the left extended an oar, took my money, and ferried my cash over to the SS Nauti, and brought my gelato back. Can’t thank you guys enough! I definitely couldn’t have enjoyed my gelato without the help of the Nauti community. Sorry the pictures aren’t better. Single sculls don’t exactly stay upright without the oars extended and in your hands, so fumbling with the oars, money, camera, and gelato was quite a feat (definitely worth it though).
What’s better than a nice row on the Potomac on a beautiful day? A nice row on the Potomac on a beautiful day with salted caramel gelato from Dolcezza Gelato! I enjoyed the gelato while trying to stay out of the way of boat traffic. I may have dripped some gelato on my legs, but the vast majority made it into my mouth. I usually enjoy my Dolcezza gelato at Merrifield, but this was quite the unique experience that made an already amazing gelato taste that much better.
I’ll definitely go back to Nauti Foods, but next time, I think I’ll rent a kayak, canoe, or SUP instead.

Nauti Foods is a new mobile food retailer, like a food truck, only its a boat on the Potomac. It sounds like it should be around where I usually row, so next time I go out, I’ll bring some cash and see if I can’t report back.

by rsiv withThe wife had a particularly good day at work, so we decided to celebrate at Trio Grill. I ordered a sunset in Brazil cocktail. It was pretty dang good. I don’t think I’ve ever had a cocktail that wasn’t excellent at Trio.
I ordered the rack of lamb. Its cooked Sous-vide to your liking, and then finished on the grill. I wouldn’t say this is my favorite meal, but its pretty far up there. I’ve had it at least four times now. Each time I go to Trio, I try to branch out, but then I starting thinking about how good the lamb is… The fried brussels sprouts are an excellent compliment. My wife opted for the waygu flat iron topped with foraged mushrooms. Also amazing.
Trio also has an outdoor cigar lounge, but it was a little humid out this evening. When I went for the opening, I did enjoy a nice stick and a few drinks, so I can definitely recommend Trio as one of the few places in the area to enjoy a stogie.
If you’re in the Merrifield area, give Trio a try.
by rsiv withAfter getting back from Cuba, I stumbled across a recipe for Hemingway’s favorite burger. Its pretty involved by current American backyard grilling standards. Even though I don’t have someone to fry one up for me, I was excited to give one a try. I invited some friends over, poured some Spanish wine, and got cookin’.
My interpretation of the original document, recipe linked above, and a few other sources provided below (I doubled the recipe to make Hemingway sized burgers):
1 lb lean ground beef
2 oz. sliced ham, minced
⅓ cup dry red wine
¼ cup grated cheddar
2 tbsp. capers, drained
2 tbsp. grated tart apple
1 tbsp. minced parsley
1½ tsp. ground sage
1½ tsp. India relish
½ tsp. Beau Monde seasoning
2 cloves garlic, minced garlic, minced
2 small scallions, minced
1 egg, beaten
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
If a recipe calls for 1 teaspoon Mei Yen Powder, use 2/3 tsp of the dry recipe (above) mixed with 1/8 tsp of soy sauce.
While I fixed up the burgers, Ryry made HW and me a julep. If you’re looking to be more authentic, maybe try a Hemingway Tom Collins.
The burgers turned out great. I highly recommend the recipe. To celebrate our success, we broke out the pipes, and had some real talk.
More info here and full recipe here, and another blogger recreated the burger here.
If you liked this post, search, “Hemingway” in my search bar to find more posts about his writing, recipes, and my trip to his house in Cuba.
***UPDATE:
After talking with Ryry and HW about how to improve when I fried up the leftovers, I tried toasting the bun in butter in the pan, and then spreading a little mayo on the bun. It was a marked improvement, and definitely worth trying, after trying the authentic version.
by rsiv withIt was a nice polar vortex kind of summer day, so the wife and I enjoy some Uno’s al fresco. It was a very pleasant time, but I wouldn’t want to be driving home with the happy hour crowd.
Later, I enjoyed some pipe tobacco my uncle Lemuel gave me, and listened to some bluegrass. I pulled about my Savinelli churchwarden, and poured a glass of Weller 107.
Then we enjoyed another weekend at Pemdenwall Cottage (the hottest B&B reservation in VA). As soon as we arrived, the head chef fixed up a huge mess of cheese fritters. As you can probably guess, they were amazing. Winn Dixie was slightly offended that we didn’t finish off all 13 pounds of them, but we did what we could.
Just about the time we could start thinking about more food, Winn Dixie got lunch going. Homemade fries with sriracha aioli, and burgers on ciabatta. Later that night, we enjoyed some stogies, a nice fire, the hot tub, new friends, and dragon berry rum daiquiris (thanks Jeronimo).
Breakfast (promptly at 9, or Chandler time for Ryry) was delicious as always. Winn Dixie’s biscuits and gravy is literally my favorite breakfast, so I was quite excited.
Some of us weren’t in tip top shape, but luckily, the floor and a blankly weren’t out of reach. Things got a little weird when Bentley may or may not have been rubbing on Jaymo’s (spelling?) feeties. After the foot settled our tumtums, we hit the pool, had some more beers, and caught some dragonflies.
After another relaxing and amazing weekend (thanks again Pam-el-a and Winn Dixie), we enjoyed a pleasant ride home in the drop top.
Above is the future site of Winn Dixie’s Diner, General Store, Tobacconist, and Sriracha aioli outlet.
When we got home, I tried (unsuccessfully) to work off all the delicious food…
by rsiv withMy rowing buddy was busy with softball (where is that team you promised us Ryry?), but it was too nice of a day to pass up. I drove over to Gtown and hit the water.
I decided to go around the far side of Roosevelt Island. The bridge openings are a little more narrow, but fortunately there wasn’t much traffic on the water today.
Above is a beautiful view of Virginia that you can only get from DC. Below, a picture of the Lincoln Memorial, as promised.
I opted for the Maas 24 this time. The water was calmer than last time, there was much less debris in the water, and its not my first row of the season. Its a good thing I wasn’t in anything smaller. Once I got out past Arlington Memorial Bridge, the no wake zone ended, and it was much choppier. I think Memorial is the rental boundary, but I remembered that a little late. Got some nice views though.
Enjoying some brief shade under Teddy’s Bridge.
The buoy above is the one that took out Ryan and put him in the drink. I was especially careful in avoiding it.
After about an hour, I docked and called it a day. Can’t wait to get back out there.
by rsiv withI fed Messi a victory beer after the Belgium match. Then we had a baby gender reveal party. I smoked some ribs, we had some burgers and dogs, and a good time was had by all.
Lil Steve did lots of grilling. Can’t thank him enough.
After the party, there were plenty of leftovers.
There was a lot of recycling to do…
Later that week, I had a julep (sort of, or two), and enjoyed The Conspirator.
My sister made a great cake for the party.
I had high hopes for the world cup final, but what can you do. Call me when you win two world wars.
by rsiv withTonight, RP, HB, and I went out for some Korean BBQ at Kogiya. We went with all you can eat option B, which includes: fatty brisket, three layer pork belly, spicy pork belly, miso pork belly, spicy chicken, small intestines, large intestines (작은 항문), and beef abomasums (tummy).
HB was a little concerned about the butthole. In the end (pun intended), she loved it.
Everything was delicious. If you’re looking for some good Korean BBQ in the Nova area, check it out.
by rsiv withJust read a really well written and concise article about soccer fandom in the USA. This past year I decided to become a Sunderland fan due to the fact that its both a coal mining and shipbuilding town, so I can relate family and college town wise. I watch at least part of almost every game thanks to NBCSportsLiveExtra. Even though my team was not much of a competitor in the league, the fight against relegation (see the link) was riveting.
