I’ve been to Sfizi when the service was not great. Today, the service was awesome. We left over 20%. I’ve always found the food to be very good. Tonight, we got the salsicce alla brace (my go-to), and the gnocchi special. The food was excellent, and the wine (half price for restaurant week), was delicious. I hope that the service continues to be as good as it was tonight, and when I go back, I’ll give y’all an update. As it stands, I definitely recommend Sfizi. Except for the insalata frutti del mare, which is better at Argias, I prefer Sfizi overall. Swing by and give it a try.

Sweetrice is much closer to our place than Pilin Thai, but during restaurant week, the deal at Pilin Thai cannot be beat. Pilin Thai offers a three course meal for two people for $25 (not per person, total). They also have a half price wine list, essentially house wines. I picked a merlot for $12. So, for $37 dollars, we got three courses each and a bottle of very drinkable wine. Pretty awesome deal. This isn’t my favorite Thai restaurant in the area, but the food is good, and if they say it will be spicy, it will be spicy. If you like Thai, its definitely worth checking out.
As an aside, why don’t American restaurants offer house wine? In Greece, Spain, Italy, etc., you can get an affordable and drinkable carafe of wine at almost any restaurant. There must be some logical reason, but it is beyond me.
by rsiv withI started a new book about TR. I’m not very far in, but enjoying it thus far. I thought about trying to explain why this book is so manly/badass, but which antidote to pick? I suppose when Teddy was shot, diagnosed himself as fine for the time-being, and gave a speech, saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.” Teddy was known to blow through a book a day, so I’ll let y’all know what new books I’m on in two days…
I’m also concurrently reading some Tennyson. If you’re not familiar, he brought us such quotes as:
“Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die.”
“Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”
“Who are wise in love, love most, say least.”
“I am a part of all that I have met.”
This weekend I also won friend of the year by helping my buddy CW move out for the 2nd weekend in a row, and then painting his old house with him.
We did get compensated with tacos and beer. The former were from cafe rio, and not half bad.
I also did a 5k. I say, “did”, and not, “ran”, because ran would be inaccurate.
The run benefited Bright Beginnings, a charity my wife works with though the Junior League of Washington.
As you can see above, the buds are on the cherry blossom trees. It won’t be long. Also, check out the bathroom break mid-race that runkeeper recorded. Pretty funny. My and my mom’s walking time was 9 minutes worse than last year. Clearly, we were not too worried about our time. My dad, however, tied for third in his age group.
After all was said and done, I rested my body while watching El Clasico.

They finally announced the deals for FCC Restaurant week (March 24-30). Just like last year, it looks like the best deal to be had is at Pilin Thai. I went last year, and the amount of food and wine we got for the price was crazy. I’ll definitely be going back to PT this year. Sfizi has 1/2 wine all week. If you haven’t been to the Eden Center yet, several restaurants are participating, so this is a great excuse. Curry Mantra II is offering 20% off. I love this place, so I’ll definitely take advantage of that. I’ll see y’all out in FCC.
by rsiv withThe wife went out to do some volunteering. I decided to light up the 2012 CA cigar of the year, the Fleur De Las Antillas Toro. I thought it was good, but not CA #1 of the year good. It had these bursts of white pepper I didn’t particularly enjoy, but the first and last third were very agreeable.
I said I’d grill up a T-Bone, so I figured why wait. I didn’t feel like standing out in the snow, so I threw it in the pan. Got a good sear on both sides, left it about rare, and just salted it, and shook a few peppers on it. I also made some creamed spinach with mushrooms, shallots, garlic, and onion. The t-bone was good, but it was no ribeye.
by rsiv withI grew up near Westover, so I’ve been going to the original Lost Dog Cafe for a good while. Later, they opened up McLean location, and now one in Merrifield as well. The original is still the closest, so during the most recent of a winter full of snow days, we ordered from Lost Dog. I had the billy’s philly with jalapenos, and we shared the spinach and artichoke dip.
I heard a rumor some of my contemporaries who worked at Lost Dog in High School, College, and after, were the ones that franchised it. Pretty cool if true.
If you head over to the original Lost Dog, be sure to cross the street and check out the Westover Market. I used to go to the grocery store there as a child, and remember reading the bulletin board (pre interwebs). Its still a grocery store, but it now has an amazing beer selection (1000+ bottles), a butcher, and an outdoor beer garden. While you’re in the neighborhood, stop by Ayers.
by rsiv withWe continued the weekend by ordering some Frozen Dairy Bar and Boardwalk Pizza. They deliver, so when we’re too tired to go out, we often order from them. This time, we didn’t even get pizza. My wife got a meatball sub, and I got a burger with sweet and hot peppers. The food is good, but the goosebumps (like a blizzard) are why you go back. Early the next morning, we headed to Burke to help a friend move. As it turns out, we had 5 guys to fill the largest truck they’d rent my buddy. It was quite a bit of work.
After about 4 hours, we had some pizza and beer. After the move, we went back to my place for some shoes, and it was so nice, we got some ice cream at Lazy Sunday.
Then we went to my friend’s St. Patricks Day party. As an Irishman, he takes his St. P’s very seriously. St. P’s punch, meat and potatoes, soda bread, and a flight of Irish whiskey. I’m not generally a big fan of Irish whiskey, but the Redbreast 12 was amazing. I may pick myself up a bottle. The hostess made her famous Irish car bomb cupcakes. I don’t know her exact recipe, but I’m sure similar ones can be found online. I’m not much of a dessert guy, but those cup cakes are bomb (intended).
The next day, we went to Fredericksburg to unload the moving truck. This time we had a lot of help, and the work went pretty quickly.

After the move, we went to Famous Dave’s for some BBQ. I would have rather gone to Bubba’s BBQ, but as we found out about a week ago, our favorite BBQ place closed. It wasn’t the best BBQ I’d ever had, but I did love me some Bubba’s BBQ, and Mo, the owner, was always a good time.
I can’t imagine a busier weekend. There is some more stuff to move, and I might end up helping with some painting, but for now, as CW says, I’m going to rest my body.

We had a power outage on Wednesday night, so I found a hardcover and a candle and did some light reading. On Thursday when a friend was coming over, I wanted to have some cocktails, but all I had on hand was the makings of a martini. According to the book, Hemingway favored a style of Gordon’s Gin no longer produced. I substituted Boodles, named after a Gentlemen’s Club, and rumored to be a favorite of Winston Churchill.
After drinks we went to Panjshir. We split a bottle of wine, and decided we had to watch The Man Who Would Be King.
In the colonial mood, we also watched Khartoum, and had some Indian food.

For the Indian, we took a short walk to Curry Mantra II for lunch the next day. CMII has a lunch buffet that is very good, but their dinners also impress. The first pic is all lunch buffet food. The rest are from a dinner the wife and I had there. I intended to write up the Falls Church Curry Mantra before, but never got around to it. Short of Rasika, which is really in a class all its own, I think you’d be hard pressed to find better Indian in the DMV.
by rsiv withI’ve been enjoying quest protein bars for a while now. I need to eat breakfast every morning in order to not feel nauseous. Some people can skip breakfast and feel fine, but I’m not one of them. A couple eggs is probably my favorite breakfast, but I don’t always have time. No matter what I choose to eat, it seems that protein helps me feel well the best, the longest. I’ve had a few protein bars before, but none I loved. They generally have too many calories, don’t taste good, or have ingredients I don’t like (particularly soy protein). Quest bars taste good. I don’t just mean good for protein bars, they legitimately taste good. On top of that, they’re only about 170 calories per bar (but vary by flavor), despite having 20 grams of protein. Thats enough for me to make it to lunch without feeling ill. Quest makes a big deal about low-carb, no gluten. I’m really just worried about calories, taste, and getting to lunch. Its also nice that they’re on amazon prime. I linked to the sampler, but the chocolate chip cookie dough is by far my favorite.
by rsiv withI’ve had Mike’s Deli a few times, but mostly for breakfast. I enjoy a large breakfast, and Mike’s usually hits the spot. It was nice outside this weekend, so the wife and I walked over to Mike’s Deli for some lunch. I got the blackened avocado burger. It was really good. Its the kind of burger that tastes like it came off a backyard bbq. Juicy and delicious. I try not to drink too much soda, and generally have diet, so real coke is a rare luxury.
On Sunday, a friend who is having a baby soon wanted to play some golf. Most courses were closed since there was still a fair amount of snow on the ground. Top golf had a three hour wait. We decided to just enjoy some cigars. I got him a box he can hand out when the child is born. We had two extra sticks to taste test the box. We found them quite enjoyable. (I still can’t thank the BOTL that sent me the cigars enough. These will really impress when handed out)
We had some bourbon and ginger, or applejack and ginger with the cigars. Some more friends came by, and then we went out to Ireland’s 4Ps.
I hope to see my buddy again on St. Patrick’s Day, but he may have his baby before then. Either way, I look forward to getting out for that round.
