I don’t recall how, but I recently came across the Scottish tradition of first-footing on Hogmanay (New Years). CK came back from Scotland and was talking about it, which is more than enough excuse for me to get into it. Essentially, first-footing involves being the first guest across someone’s threshold after midnight on New Years. You bring gifts and set the tone for the new year. I’ll try to play it both ways: have a gift ready for when I’m a guest, and then another for the first guest to come to my home. I imagine my first guest won’t be early New Year’s Day, but I’ll have a gift ready none the less.
