On Saturday the high was in the mid-50s, so FJ his buddy Doug, D.S. and I together for a round at the Oaks Course at Twin Lakes. I got to try out my new garmin.
I was an amazingly beautiful day, especially after the weather we’ve been having. D.S. asked how often I get to play golf with my dad, and was clearly envious. I don’t know if he has a kid, or lives far away from him, but it sure makes you think and appreciate what you have.
I loved the S6. The distances are great, but its visual display of the fairways and greens is awesome. I also really liked having the layup distances. FJ has an older model, and definitely wants to upgrade. Now if only I was a decent golfer…
I took one last moment to enjoy the sun and being outside.
The next morning, Fster watched her first Sunderland Match. Then we took a nice healthy walk…
…to McDonalds.
Then it was back to the grind.
by rsiv withI don’t recall how, but I recently came across the Scottish tradition of first-footing on Hogmanay (New Years). CK came back from Scotland and was talking about it, which is more than enough excuse for me to get into it. Essentially, first-footing involves being the first guest across someone’s threshold after midnight on New Years. You bring gifts and set the tone for the new year. I’ll try to play it both ways: have a gift ready for when I’m a guest, and then another for the first guest to come to my home. I imagine my first guest won’t be early New Year’s Day, but I’ll have a gift ready none the less.
Read more about first-footing, and how you need to bring a half bottle of whisky here.

HB and I were getting down on some Peaky Blinders before her due date. I was just setting up an iPad HB got at her company xmas party when I found out season two is out.
I don’t recall how I stumbled upon the Peaky Blinders, but its a very enjoyable show. Its based on a real life gang of WWI vets in Birmingham England. The gang’s name comes from the razors sewn into the brim’s of their caps, to be used as weapons in a pinch, or to make a statement. If perhaps you’re sitting around at night watching a baby, its a good way to pass the time. Since I hadn’t heard anything about the show, and just kind of came across it, I thought I’d share it with y’all here.
by rsiv withThis morning I made HB some oatmeal. Then I went and got the tree out of the truck and drilled it out for the stand. In case you run into a similar issue, you need a 1/2″ bit, and a little kitchen spray oil for lube never hurts either.
Later, HB had her first taste of mercury in nine months. I had a pretty interesting roll topped with lobster salad.
Then it was time to decorate my parents’ tree. I mostly sat back with some brown and enjoyed the company and music.
FJ and Swaggy-we did most of the work.
Candy was in town, so she got to hang a Maryland crab that she’d gotten us.
by rsiv withI used to work an xmas tree lot for the boy scouts. I’d prefer to get a tree at the scout lot still but we can’t get the first pick anymore as we don’t unload the trucks, and maybe we got a little too fancy. Case in point: cedar garland (it smells amazing).
Fraiser fur is where its at, but I guess a douglass will do in a pinch. We’re definitely not a long needle tree family. Our next door neighbors used to get pines and then decorate them with their weird bubble lights and clip-on candles. Its a miracle they didn’t burn their house down.
After securing a fancy tree, I had a not so fancy meal of kapow duck and malt liquor.
Oddly enough, Bender was also getting down on malt liquor tonight.

With the new addition, we couldn’t make it out to the inlaws this year, so they came to us for lunch. I went to the Italian Store for some milanos on hard.
FJ got a nice port, a flight of Madeira, and a fancy new wine contraption for his bday (also, his first grandchild).
We put on some jazz, mulled some wine, enjoyed some leftovers, and then had my sister’s blackberry jam cake.
by rsiv withM&S Tysons is my go-to for special occasions and entertaining out of town relatives. It has great food, an amazing raw bar, and plenty of options for everyone. As you can tell from the menu, we just went for FJ’s bday.
My swordfish casino was great, and HB’s flounder was delicious. Unfortunately, I failed to get a picture of the oysters, and the insanely good guinness mixed with pumpkin puree (a must try).
I saved my favorite part about the Tysons McCormick & Schmick’s for last. The private booths are awesome. I’m not much for crowds or loud restaurants. These booths are perfect when you just want to enjoy the company of your group without interruptions.
by rsiv withHB was craving some pumpkin, so we went to Panjshir for some Kadu Palow. I ordered the chopped kebab, which turned out to be frenched lamb chops on the kebab. They were very good.
by rsiv withWith the birth of my firstborn imminent, the wife and I have been busy trying to not waste a second of freedom. We enjoyed some Chasin’ Tails a while back. Crawfish, oh dang, n’awlins hot, and beignets and chicory coffee for dessert.
On Veteran’s Day, we had lunch at Bonchon. Then later I poured a dram and lit up a pipe by the fire.
Later in the week we went out with Marteen to Nam Viet for the best Vietnamese dish I’ve ever had: Bo Dun on skewer. Its beef rolled around vegetables, that you put into a rice paper wrapper and dip in a sweet honey sauce. Amazing.
My dad had a half cord delivered, but it was a little larger and greener than advertised. A log took a bad hop into my shin, but fortunately I had my Red Wings on, so I barely had a knot to ice when I got home.
Then HB and I enjoyed another brunch at Paladar. I was adventurous enough to try a pumpkin spice mojito that despite being too sweet, worked very well.
by rsiv withI’m off to the Northern Neck to cook a whole hog. We’ve been having a pig roast for HW’s birthday for 10 years now. The first one was behind the frat house in a residential neighborhood. Now its a bit more upscale, being on the water with plenty of room. I’ll post all the pictures when I get back, but you can follow it live by following me on twitter:
I also love to hear feedback. Head over to the, “about me” page and drop me a line if you’re so inclined.
